Job Description

The student will work up to 4 hours per week with Dr. Carl Luchies on the KU Lawrence Campus with the goal of developing methods for using AI as a teaching assistant for Mechanical Engineering undergraduate courses in Mechanics (ME211, ME320, ME311) and Experimentation (ME455). Prompt Engineering techniques will be used. Activities include, but are not limited to: writing extensive prompts for tutoring, concept explanation with examples, critical thinking in problem solution, practice in principle identification given a problem statement, and developing AI chatbots as needed. The team will primarily use CoPilot.

Responsibilities

Prompt Engineering techniques will be used. The team will primarily use CoPilot. Activities include, but are not limited to, developing prompts and/or chatbots for:

- (20%) tutoring by AI,
- (20%) teaching concepts to AI,
- (20%) concept exploration,
- (20%) critical thinking,
- (20%) principle identification given a problem statement.

Requirements

- Junior, senior status or graduate student status in a degree program within the KU School of Engineering departments.
- Successfully completed ME211 Statics with top grades.
- Currently enrolled in ME320 Dynamics or completed with top grades.
- Plans to enroll in ME455 next academic year.
- Experience writing and editing Generative-AI prompts.
- Experience utilizing generative AI in a classroom setting.
- Experience working to implement AI into an engineering classroom application.
- During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must:

* have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or
* be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or
* be enrolled in summer session or be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be for undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Preferred Qualifications:
- Training in Prompt Engineering.
- Experience in Prompt Engineering.
- AI chatbot development experience.
